Gregory Carroll

Gregory Carroll, baritone, most recently won the Metropolitan Opera National Council District Auditions and was second runner-up at the subsequent round. He is being hailed by critics and musicians as one of the regionÕs brightest new talents. Gregory has performed a varied repertoire as a guest-soloist including C.P.E. BachÕs Die Auferstehung und Himmelfahrt Jesu, BeethovenÕs Symphony No.9, OrffÕs Carmina Burana, Tu_apsk_Õs The Sacrifice, both Fantasia on Christmas Carols and Five Mystical Songs by Vaughan Williams as well as Requiem settings by DuruflŽ, FaurŽ, and Mozart. He has appeared with institutions such as the American Sinfonietta, Opus 7 Vocal Ensemble, the Tacoma Symphony, the Victoria Chamber Orchestra (BC), and the Whatcom Symphony Orchestra. For the 2007-2008 season his engagements will include the Annas Bay Music Festival for performances of HandelÕs Messiah and the University of Washington Symphony Orchestra and Choirs for Vaughan WilliamsÕ Symphony No.1 ŅA Sea SymphonyÓ.

Equally at home on the theater stage, Gregory has performed roles including the title characters in Ernst KrenekÕs Der Diktator, Kirke MechemÕs Tartuffe, and TelemannÕs Don Quichotte auf der Hochzeit des Comacho as well as Doctor Gregg in Douglas MooreÕs Gallantry, Papageno in Die Zauberflšte, and Crespel in Les Contes dÕHoffmann. In addition, he has sung excerpts from Il barbiere di Siviglia, Cos“ fan tutte, LÕElisir dÕamore, Die Fledermaus, FlotowÕs Martha, and SondheimÕs Sweeney Todd.

Gregory has toured Europe five times in recent years singing concerts, recitals, and masses in Italy, France, Spain, Portugal, Germany, and Hungary. He is one of few who can claim to have sung for both Servant of God, John Paul II and His Holiness, Pope Benedict XVI at Vatican City. He has also been a featured performer in Thailand, notably at the Bangkok ISB International Music Festival.

Gregory has previously sung with Opus 7 Vocal Ensemble, frequently sings with the Seattle Opera Chorus, and is currently the baritone soloist at St. James Cathedral singing in the Cathedral Choir, the Cathedral Chant Choir, and the professional ensemble, Cathedral Cantorei. He teaches voice for Cascadian Chorale, the Midsummer Musical Retreat, and at the University of Washington School of Music where he is completing graduate studies. He holds a Bachelor of Music degree from Western Washington University where he studied voice performance, voice pedagogy, and music education. Gregory has been featured in masterclasses with Nico Castell, Allan Monk, and Carol Vaness and his past teachers include Vinson Cole, Davida Kagen, and Joy Sherman. Gregory is currently a student of world-renown soprano, Jane Eaglen.
