Jerry Rice graduated from Whitworth College in 1997 with a business degree. He was the assistant swim coach at Whitworth College for a year before moving to San Diego to train and race in Olympic size triathlons. After making the U.S. team he went to Worlds in Montreal in the fall of 1999. Placing 24th in his age division moved him up on the U. S. team from 12th to 7th. He was happy with his race. Jerry now has friends all over the world that are triathletes. Last year he served as a teaching assistant in a school in the San Diego area He was liked so much the school district hired him to teach for two years if he promised to go to night school to get a teaching degree which he is doing right now. This year Jerry is running marathons. In November he ran a marathon in 3 hours and 5 minutes in Washington DC.
He manages to get together with his brother Jeff a lot. They are about 10 hours apart driving by car. They have done some triathlons and open water races together. In September Jerry placed in the top ten in an open water swim in the ocean in San Diego. In August Jerry flew home with lots of goals to fulfill. Brent and Jerry swam across the Puget Sound to Vashon Island and then climbed to the top of Mt. Shuksan. Brian, Brent, and Jerry also climbed Mt. Rainier.
Jeff graduated from Whitworth College in 1997 with a degree in psychology. He worked in Sedro Wooley for Job Core before moving to Flagstaff, Arizona. He applied to graduate school at Northern Arizona University where they only accept ten graduate students a year and Jeff scored high enough to make the top ten. He is now in graduate school and plans to be a high school counselor. Last year while Jerry was in Montreal, Jeff swam in an open water swim in San Diego. While there he ran into two of his old swim coaches that he had when he was 14 years old. They were competing in the open water race too and placed in the top ten in their age divisions. Jeff did it just for fun. Last summer Jeff placed 11th in the Wildflower 2000 Triathlon in Flagstaff, Arizona. He has done a lot of hiking in the Grand Canyon and knows that area very well. He explores the Mesa Verde area quite a bit and knows all the best places to fish.
Both boys keep in touch with Scott Palmer. Scott has flown down to visit both Jerry and Jeff on separate trips. Scott Palmer has been a good friend and fellow classmate all through their years at St. Philomena and in high school.
Brian graduated from Whitworth College last spring. He traveled across the U.S. to go to nationals in swimming. He had a lot of fun and swam his personal best times. This last summer he worked and earned enough money to buy his first car. He is in Spokane and is the assistant swim coach for the Whitworth team.
Brent Rice sadly was killed in an auto accident. We miss him very much.
